¿De quién es esta carta? appears to be an innocent question, but it isn't because it may have two different translations.


 You find a letter on the floor and ask: ¿De quién es esta carta? Whose letter is this? (Who is the owner of this letter?)

We receive a letter from a stranger and ask: ¿De quién es esta carta? Who is this letter from?

Esta carta es de Pedro = this letter is from Peter.
Esta carta es de Pedro = this letter belongs to Peter.

Whose house is that? ¿De quién es esa casa?
