CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
Of late I have been reading about "cultural appropriation." Some people in the US have been accused of faking a Spanish accent in English, changing their name from Hillary to Hilaria, pretending a non-existent Spanish heritage, etc. I am confused mainly because my idea of "culture" has nothing to do with just accents, names, and lies about grandparents´ place of birth. But regardless, I think this business of "cultural appropriation" is, deep down, a tribute to the "culture" that has been supplanted. After all, if someone wants to pass off as a Cuban, Mexican, Spanish, French... it must be because there is some prestige to it. Who cares whether the lady in question is a fake Spaniard or not! What´s important is that she knows that she will stand out and get ahead faster in US media pretending to be Spanish, rather than being a run-of-the-mill native American. So, let me thank Hilaria or Hillary for her tribute to Spain.
