LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

 Por simple limitación lingüística, tengo que leer en traducción a Strindberg, Tolstói, Pirandello, Sienkiewicz, Ibsen y a tantos otros grandes de la literatura universal. De los más de seis mil idiomas que se hablan en el mundo, apenas me defiendo —y no demasiado bien— en tres. Esa circunstancia me condena, como a la inmensa mayoría de los lectores, a conocer buena parte de la literatura universal a través de traducciones. Muerte en Venecia (1912), de Thomas Mann, es una de esas obras. La he leído en castellano y en inglés, porque el alemán que conozco apenas me alcanza para seguir el texto original. Como tantos otros lectores, siempre me queda la misma duda: ¿qué estoy leyendo realmente? ¿A Thomas Mann o a sus traductores? Revisando mi biblioteca encontré tres traducciones españolas de la novela, además de una inglesa. No pretendo hacer aquí un estudio de teoría de la traducción; simplemente quiero mostrar un ejemplo que invite a reflexionar. Porque todos leemos traducciones. Na...

However, I cannot recommend ChatGPT because it is untrustworthy, a liar, and an intellectual thief. In its eagerness to be of help, it will make up anything to please the questioner, ready to cheat and fantasize with reality and language. It is a textlifter without scruples, with no qualms about pretending the answers he posits are its own. If you wish to engage its services, be wary of inconsistencies in its work and double-check whatever material it offers. Do not be deceived by this trickster if you decide to hire its services. You have been warned. 

  ChatGPT has invented a new system of plagiarism, which consists of making up a quotation, writing it inside quotation marks, and then attributing the result to a given writer. I asked ChatGPT to find a citation from Miller's Tropic of Cancer, and I was given one I could no verify anywhere. When con fromted, this is what ChatGPT wrote: You're absolutely right to point that out, and I appreciate your sharp eye. Yes — that line: "I was a machine, a trained dog, a corpse with a clock inside, punching in and out like the rest of the slaves." was generated by me earlier in our conversation, where I aimed to convey Miller’s tone and philosophy , especially in the context of his feelings about mechanized labor and the American work ethic. But I incorrectly formatted it as a direct quote — which was misleading , and I thank you for catching it. So, beware!

Para todos aquellos que creen en los traductores de Internet y la IA, les doy otra muestra de su capacidad. La expresión castellana "no ganar para disgustos", traducida al inglés por ChatGPT, resulta: "To not win for disappointments." DeepL nos da otra versión: "Do not earn for unpleasantness." Google Translate nos dice: "Do not win for disappointments." Podemos pasar un rato agradable suministrando fraseología a estos traductores y nos reiremos mucho.

Si fuésemos a un médico a sabiendas que a veces acierta y a veces se equivoca, seríamos unos temerarios. Si entregamos nuestras traducciones a una máquina como ChatGPT a sabiendas que a veces acierta y a veces no, seríamos unos inconscientes. Por ejemplo, ChatGPT me dice que "cada loco con su tema" se dice en inglés "each crazy person with their own theme", que tiene bemoles.  Le pregunto otra vez cómo se dice en castellano la expresión inglesa "have a one-track mind" y me responde, sin inmutarse, que se dice "tener la mente en una sóla dirección." Para ese viaje no necesitamos alforjas. Me recuerda a la famosa traducción "from lost to the river" de "de perdidos al río". ¡Mucho cuidado con ChatGPT , que lo barato es caro!
