Mankind invented language to communicate, not to create confusion. Languages with prepositions -Spanish, and English- have problems with usage. Native speakers sometimes have problems with prepositions and ideas are not forwarded clearly. In English, there is a clear distinction between "Johnny is sitting on the table" and "Johnny is sitting at the table". Likewise, in Spanish we say "Juanito está sentado en la mesa" and "Juanito está sentado a la mesa." In both examples, where Johnny is situated regarding the table is clear. But enter Spaniards and start confusing "en" with "a" in this case and "Johnny está sentado en la mesa" may now mean "sitting at the table or sitting on the table." This silly confusion has led the Spanish Language Academy ( Real Academia Española ) to sanctify and sanction the error and accept it as good. Las preposiciones son difíciles de emplear bien, hasta en nuestro propio idioma, hasta por gente monolingüe. Pongo por ejemplo las preposiciones "en" y "a" en lengua castellana. Los políticos españoles que quieren ser presidentes del gobierno (Sres. Mariano Rajoy, Albert Rivera, Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Iglesias ) se empeñan todos en querer sentarse en la mesa de negociaciones. Esto lo repiten a diario: sentarse en la mesa, sentarse en la mesa, sentarse en la mesa. Si los cuatro se sientan en una mesa posiblemente se rompa y se caigan. Está claro que quieren decir s entarse a la mesa. Pero lo repiten tanto que llega un momento que hasta suena bien este dislate preposicional. En inglés we sit at the table to eat, discuss, write ... Y colocamos algo on the table , en (encima de) la mesa. Las preposiciones son complicadas, lo sabemos todos, pero tienen su razón de ser.
