  Hispanic Literature’s Edgar Allan Poe Did you know Hispanic literature has its own Poe? His name is  Horacio Quiroga  (1878–1937), born in Uruguay and later settled in Argentina. Like Poe, he explored horror, madness, death, the bizarre, and the fatal side of human nature. Quiroga’s life was marked by tragedy: suicides in his family, the deaths of close relatives, and even the accidental killing of a friend. At 22, he discovered Poe, whose influence he openly acknowledged throughout his life. He became a teacher, photographer, explorer, and lived for years in the jungle — an experience that deeply shaped his dark vision. La greguería de Ramón Gómez de la Serna La greguería de Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) es, en definitiva, el haiku japonés en castellano: el arte de expresar mucho en poquísimas palabras; el arte de dejar que el lector cavile, se asombre, investigue y medite. Decir que “la gasolina es el incienso de la civilización” ( Greguerías , 1979) da para mucho pensar sobre la “civilización” y hacia dónde va. Y ¿será verdad que el hombre trata de expiar su deseo de mujer, de sexo, de lujuria por medio del matrimonio, como nos dice Ramón? “El que se casa trata de solucionar con la expiación su deseo de mujer” ( Greguerías , 1979).   El Rey Felipe VI le acaba de entregar el premio Cervantes de las letras a Álvaro Pombo , en silla de ruedas, que no ha podido leer su discurso. Me alegro mucho por él y por las letras hispánicas en general. No le he leído nada, nada de lo que ha escrito. Tampoco les leí nada a Vargas Llosa o García Márquez. ¿Por qué, me pregunto? ¿Falta de interés o tiempo? ¿Podemos leerlos a todos? No lo sé. Sólo quiero explicar que estoy convencido de que el Sr. Pombo se lo merece con creces. ¡Enhorabuena, don Álvaro!

  I no longer read contemporary authors. I am a literary scaredy-cat, afraid of wasting my remaining time reading a novel by an upstart not worth his salt, who will most probably disappoint me. I keep away from any "opera prima" by unknown authors. Fernando Aramburu has been in the Spanish literary scene for many years, and I kept away from him for the reasons I explain above. He has been at it long enough, and with success, even international success, that I decided to give his last novel a try. Los vencejos (2021) is an easy read, despite its 700 pages. He has a mastery in the Spanish language few posses, to the point that I was able to gather 231 citations for my upcoming Phraseological Dictionary, English-Spanish . His characters are very true to life and he is able, somehow, to write a "teaching novel", the type of narrative where the reader can learn something profitable to live by.
