LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

 

  Celia, la alumna con la que charlé sobre literatura inglesa y con cuyos apuntes escribí el librito Literatura en lengua inglesa I , me ha visitado para hablarme del nuevo año 2024. Tiene planes y quiere seguir con nuestras charlas sobre literatura escrita en inglés.  - Me ha gustado el librito aunque le encuentro reparos. - me dice. - Yo también le encuentro reparos, pero recuerda que no hay tela sin falta ( the best cloth may have a moth in it ). - respondo. - Veo que en la portada el nombre de Thackeray está mal escrito. - y me mira fijamente. - La portada no ha sido cosa mía, aunque me la mandaron para que diera el visto bueno y no me fijé. Culpa mía, claro. Nadie lo ha notado todavía o, por lo menos, nadie ha dicho nada. - ¿Continuamos con las clases para componer un segundo tomito? - pregunta Celia. - Si te parece, por mí encantado. Today is the opening of the Madrid Book Fair. It is raining, per usual. This year I was not invited to sign. Last year I declined the invitation because I was not up to it physically. While having a cup of coffee, this morning, I was watching a television report about the opening, showing interviews with authors, and shots of umbrellas under the rain. It brought reminiscences of times past. Also, I was shocked to realize how lost in touch with the literary scene I have become. Let me mention only three of the interviewees: Rodrigo de Pablo , Manuel Espejo , and Juan Luis Cano . The three writers have authored several successful books, according to the reporter. And here I am, in the dark: never heard about them. Tomorrow, and without fail, I will rush to El Retiro Park and learn about the new Spanish literary scene.  

-holic: sufijo que tiene muchas posibilidades, ahora que todo el mundo parece ser adicto a algo: Alcoholic, alcohólico                      Chocoholic , adicto al chocolate Computerholic , adicto a los ordenadores (computadoras) Drinkaholic , bebedor Foodaholic , adicto a la comida, comilón Golfaholic , jugadores de golf empedernidos Shopaholic , compradores cumpulsivos Sugarholic , adictos al azúcar Workaholic , adictos al trabajo Yo confieso ser un recalcitrante bookaholic y readaholic , amén de linguaholic. En Es p aña se cree que un alien es un bicho raro, feo, que proviene del espacio exterior y remoto, un extraterrestre. Esa es una de las acepciones de la palabra, la otra es extranjero, ajeno, foráneo, que es la más empleada en la vida cotidiana: US Immigration has stepped up efforts to catch fugitive aliens , la inmigración de USA ha aumentado sus esfuerzos para atrapar a los extranjeros fugitivos (están obsesionados.) He has assumed alien customs , ha asumido costumbres foráneas. She married an alien from South America , se casó con un extranjero de Sudamérica. Aliens come to take our jobs away , (!?) los extranjeros vienen a quitarnos nuestros empleos (esto lo dicen en todas partes, especialmente los vagos.)

El verbo es nombre también: to smoke, humear, fumar. Smoke, humo.Pero en algunos casos el nombre es diferente del verbo : Advise , aconsejar, advice , consejo. Believe , creer, belief , creencia Broad , ancho, breadth , anchura Breathe , respirar , breath , aliento Choose , elegir , choice , elección Deep , profundo , depth , profundidad Fly , volar, flight , vuelo Hate , odiar , hatred , odio High , alto, height , altura Honest , honrado , honesty , honradez Hot , caliente, heat , calor

Slogan, a distinctive phrase that identifies a manufacturer: Apple: Think different. Volkswagen: Think small. Esso: Put a tiger in your tank. Interflora: Say it with flowers. We are afraid of the dark, of mice, of war, of death. We are afraid of making mistakes, of oversleeping, of losing our job, of dying. We are afraid to make mistakes, to oversleep, to lose our job, to die. Easy, right?
