LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

Esta expresión francesa, née (participio femenino de naître , “nacer”), se emplea para indicar el apellido de soltera de una mujer casada. Su uso va decayendo, conforme avanza la emancipación efectiva de la mujer. Sin embargo, aún persisten coletazos, ramalazos de costumbre machista: en los Estados Unidos y en Inglaterra la mujer sigue, por lo general, adoptando el apellido del marido. Muchas ya no, pero todavía sucede. Nombre de soltera: maiden name .

  I have stated on different occasions that, I am not a believer, yet I am sold on traditions, rituals, and festivities of all kinds. Unfortunately, I am not a believer, but I can appreciate all the benchmarks and milestones that our Christian culture has laid out for us during a given year. Take the Epiphany, "the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi", the Three Wise Men , who searched for the newborn and on the 6th of January brought him gold, incense, and myrrh. Yesterday children in Spain woke up to open the gifts  Los Tres Reyes Magos had brought to celebrate that Epiphany. A harmless celebration that brings joy and mirth to the whole family, especially those with children. So, Felices Reyes Magos and Feliz Año Nuevo, de nuevo.    

 Two Spanish words are much in the air these festive days. "Ambiente" and "fiesta" dominate the vocabulary scene, especially at Christmas. "Me gusta ir de fiesta; esta noche vamos de fiesta; salgo de fiesta todos los sábados" are common phrases we hear. With "ambiente" we have a problem because it is difficult to define, and dictionaries do not help. In Spain, people say: "hay buen ambiente en la Plaza Mayor", or "había buen ambiente en la reunión." In both cases, "ambiente" means plenty of people and hard drinking. Perhaps drugs are also involved. "Hay mucho ambiente en la called Preciados en Madrid" can be translated to there are plenty of people on that popular street, going in and out of bars. So, "¿vamos de fiesta?" could be translated to "shall we paint the town red?" I guess I am a wet blanket and party pooper but "no voy de fiesta" and I dislike "ambientes". (...

Se habla ahora mucho de si, como mínimo, la esposa del presidente del gobierno Español, doña Begoña Gómez, ha recibido trato de favor de empresas, instituciones y, en especial, de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Veo que "trato de favor" está en mi diccionario bilingüe: Trato de favor Special (privileged) treatment, cronyism, give someone a leg up Le dan trato de favor en el banco porque es sobrino del jefe de policía He gets special treatment at the bank because he is the chief of police’s nephew — “Quieren saber si la Junta de Castilla y León dio trato de favor a la Caja Rural de Zamora.” El Mundo, 24/08/1994. Esp.    

  No soy supersticioso pero me he dado cuenta de que hoy es martes y...13. Ya conocemos el dicho de que "el martes, ni te cases ni te embarques" porque el martes tiene mala fama en la cultura hispánica (y en otras, supongo). El venezolano Guillermo Morón nos dice en su El gallo de las espuelas de oro : "... el martes ni te cases ni te embarques" y añade más "ni de tu casa te apartes." Y a pesar de lo escrito arriba, quizá tenga algún poso de superstición, aunque estoy a salvo porque para mí el día aciago es el Friday the 13th . No olvidemos que Judas Iscariote fue el invitado número 13 a la última cena. En muchos hoteles no tienen piso 13, ni habitaciones número 13. Yo me casé un Friday the 13th y la cosa salió mal, pero no creo que fuese por la fecha. Lo importante es que en castellano decimos martes y trece y en inglés Friday the 13th .
