LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

Reading Ilya U. Topper’s article in the Instituto Cervantes’s El Trujamán , “¿Quién asesinó al verbo matar?” (July 29, 2026), in which he bemoans the chaotic drift of Spanish into the passive voice, giving examples with matar , I find myself in agreement with him. I have pointed this out several times because, although the passive is part of the Spanish language, its use differs from English, and Spanish has ways of avoiding it and employing the active voice, which, according to Strunk and White, “is usually more direct and vigorous than the passive.” However, I differ with Topper on the reason why the passive voice is slowly replacing the active voice. He states: “El origen de esta evolución del idioma casi con certeza es un error en las traducciones del inglés, fomentado por los programas multilingües: aunque Google Translate es hoy bastante versátil según el contexto, la frase aislada «he was killed» sigue traduciéndose como fue asesinado”, blaming human translators and AI programs....

Se nos dice que debemos evitar la   voz pasiva   en lengua inglesa siempre que sea posible y ahora resulta que en lengua española se está imponiendo especialmente en los medios de difusión.  La voz activa, que es lo apropiado en español, es la posibilidad de ser directos, claros, concisos... y activos. He compilado unos ejemplos de la televisión: --"Una mujer es herida muy grave por disparos..." (TVE1, 27/8/14) Hieren a una mujer por disparos queda mejor... --"Un experto de CAE es trasladado a EE.UU. por sospecha de ébola." (TVE1 28/8/14.) Trasladan a EE.UU. a un experto... --"Flores primer ministro en ser arrestado ..." (TV1, 6/9/14.) ¿Cómo arreglamos esto? -- "Aceves ha sido llamado por el juez para..." (Antena 3, 29/9/14) El juez llama a Aceves para... -- "El Presidente de Panamá será recibido por el rey Felipe VI..." (TVE1, 7/9/14.) El rey Felipe VI recibirá al presidente... -- "La vicepresidenta del gobierno ha sido pregun...

  I know full well I am fighting a losing battle against the windmills of the Spanish passive voice. I fear it is taking over and that little can be done to remedy its encroachment into the language. I was vexed once again to read in Todo Literatura (April 24, 2023), written by a certain José Antonio Sierra , and in his article about this year´s Premio Cervantes, Rafael Cadenas , the following gems: "El premio Miguel de Cervantes es otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura..." "... demuestra el poder transformador de la palabra cuando la lengua es llevada al límite." "Los candidatos pueden ser presentados ..." "Su amplia obra de ensayo es considerada ..." What on earth is wrong with the new writers? Why are they so set in changing Spanish grammar and style? What´s wrong with: "El Ministerio de Cultura otorga el premio Miguel de Cervantes." "... demuestra el poder transformador de la palabra cuando se lleva la lengua al límite....

Years ago my daughter Lorraine gifted me a copy of Strunk & White´s The Elements of Style which I still have and use. In section 14, Use of the active voice we read: "The active voice is usually more vigorous than the passive." In Spanish, the passive voice has been shunned for centuries until now. My guess is that those who study English and see the use of the passive voice by inept writers, tend to import it into Spanish, which does not need it, composing awkward sentences like: "El ladrón fue detenido por la policía" instead of "la policía detuvo al ladrón." Everybody in Spain (at least in Spain) has jumped into the bandwagon of the passive voice, especially the media, and mostly television. They might say: "El aceite es vendido a un precio más alto que hace un año" instead of "el aceite se vende a un precio más alto..."  If you are studying Spanish, please avoid the passive voice. Do yourself that favor. 

Los idiomas, como las aguas, van por sus cauces naturales y según su propio devenir, y van cambiando según sus propias leyes y reglas naturales, sin violencias externas, ajenas a su esencia natural. Esto lo traigo a colación por los que se empeñan últimamente en forzar la voz pasiva e introducirla en el castellano innecesariamente. "He sido despedido de la empresa" por "me han despedido de la empresa", "la novela ha sido escrita por el célebre poeta mexicano" en vez de "el célebre poeta mexicano ha escrito la novela." Ya sé que tratar de pedir que nos ajustemos a la esencia del castellano hoy es como pedir cotufas en el golfo, pero me aventuro  a hacerlo para que no se diga. Una cosa es importar léxico inglés y otra introducir a hurtadillas modos gramaticales innecesarios en castellano. La voz pasiva, como su nombre indica, es pasiva.
