LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

  Recently, I was approached by a former student who has become a friend, inquiring about the possibility of me teaching his current wife. Due to my connection with him and his family, I could not refuse and asked him to have her call me. I always insist on a prior meeting to assess the character and personality of potential learners. Time and experience have turned me into a rather good judge of character. Somewhat reluctantly, I decided to meet with her twice a week. I provided my grammar book 1 for a quick review of the basics. After two weeks, Mrs. X decided to meet only once a week because she was very busy at work. She did mention that she works out three times a week, lifting weights and playing tennis. After a month, she was sick one day, had several business meetings on another, and also had a business trip. Eventually, I gave up asking her to do some studying and homework. Ni que decir tiene -y perdonen el cliché- que no tengo nada que objetar a que la Infanta de España, Doña Sofía de Borbón y Ortiz , estudie en Gales, en el UWC Atlantic College . Fundado por un alemán, Kurt Hahn, este colegio sigue un international curriculum , y otorga un bachillerato internacional. Un elevado número de miembros del claustro y de la administración son también muy internacionales, así como el 80 por cien del alumnado. De nuevo, nada que objetar, pero sí que tengo objeciones con respecto a la lengua inglesa. Doña Sofía  va a estar practicando inglés con gente cuyo idioma nativo no es el inglés. No dudo que la enseñanza será impecable y transmitida con la última tecnología, pero sí dudo del entorno lingüístico que, para el aprendizaje del idioma no es el más idóneo. Claro que posiblemente se eligió esta escuela internacional por motivos que nada tienen que ver con el inglés. Steven Pressfield , in his " The War of Art ", which I recommend, explains what a pro is. Allow me to paraphrase: A pro is he who shows up every morning, the person we can always count on, the man or woman who is reliable, who never waivers or falters. A pro is a professional, the opposite of slacker, incompetent, amateur, clumsy, inept, inexperienced... a dabbler who works at anything in an irregular or  superficial manner. I am a professional student of Spanish, English, French, German, Valenciano... and not a day goes by without studying and learning something in these languages. I have not mastered them well, and never will, I know, but I will keep on trying, till the day I die. I am a professional. I am a pro. A serious student. I make no excuses about lack of time, about traffic, lack of money, my job, my family, parking spaces... Do you take your language-study seriously?   

Admito que soy un fracasado en mi faceta de profesor de idiomas. Lo intento, pero no logro interesar a mis alumnos, ni entusiasmarlos por los idiomas, ni insuflarles curiosidad por la herramienta más importante de la vida, que es la comunicación. Todo mi entusiasmo por el milagro del lenguaje, la gran invención de la humanidad, se hace añicos frente al muro consistente y fuerte de su desinterés y casi menosprecio y apatía. No logro despertar curiosidad por ser bilingüe. Fracaso en mis tentativas por convencerles de que el que mejor domina un idioma lo tiene más fácil en la vida. No creen, como yo, que todos los idiomas son maravillosos. Fallo en mis tentativas de hacerles pronunciar mejor. No les importa. Soy un fracasado. Mis alumnos sólo quieren aprender un poco para salir del paso, aprobar un examen, conseguir un empleo, viajar a la China y chapurrear inglés con chinos que chapurrean el inglés. Terrible. Quizá no esté solo y a otros profesores les pasa lo mismo.
