LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

The news of the death of my friend José María Carrascal has shocked me. He was the type of person I thought would live forever, certainly I believed he would outlive me. Don´t ask me why. He favored me with his friendship, with articles about my books, with a prologue to my Phonétic inglesa , and his interest in the English language. Lately, we had been in the habit of meeting once a year over a cup of coffee and talking about literature and politics. I have all of his books, autographed. His apocryphal autobiography of Ortega y Gasset is my favorite. It seems that last Tuesday he wrote and published his last article for the newspaper ABC. Today is a sad day indeed.     

Reading a translation is always an act of faith, almost a religious act of faith: we must believe as fact and truth that the "translation" is a veritable reflection of the original. And we accept as Gospel truth that what we are reading is a good rendering of the original because we have no way of knowing otherwise. So I was thinking we should do away with translations and install "versions" instead. This is what José María Carrascal has done in his novel Un sueño irlandés , An Irish Dream , where he did two different versions of it, instead of simply translating.  ( https://www.amazon.es/Irish-Dream-English-Maria-Carrascal-ebook/dp/B07C1DQJ1P)  But, of course, Carrascal is the author, not the translator and he knows both languages well. If a "version" of a Spanish novel appears in English, we cannot complain if it differs slightly from the original, after all it is not a "translation." Methinks this is either a wonderful idea, ...

Como no podemos aprender a leer todos los idiomas posibles, tenemos que utilizar traducciones para disfrutar de las grandes obras de la literatura mundial. A pocos les es dado leer a Goethe, Pirandello, Tolstoi, Homero,  Zola, Camoens, Milton... en sus escritos originales. Nos guste o no, la traducción es necesaria. En nuestro caso ahora, Un sueño irlandés , tenemos algo mejor: dos versiones de la mismas obra que son iguales pero diferentes, hechas por el autor mismo. Tenemos la oportunidad de elegir un idioma u otro, entre los dos más hablados del mundo.
