FATALISM IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH

Imagen
Are Spaniards prone to a fatalistic stance on life? Their language seems to withstand the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune with expressions like: así es la vida ; son cosas de la vida ; la vida es así . They seem to find comfort in such phrases and sigh misfortune away with them. Se nos ha quemado la casa, ¡así es la vida! Perhaps the English-speaking peoples are guilty also of a certain fatalism. Expressions like such is life, that's the way it is, those are the breaks, it is what it is, that's the way the cookie crumbles (the elephant farts) , also point in that direction. What is your opinion? Spanish fatalism is more communal and resigned, English fatalism more stoical and wry.
