LAS LENGUAS INGLESA Y ESPAÑOLA de Delfín Carbonell

 Cuando le pedí al entonces Editor-in-Chief del Oxford English Dictionary, John Simpson, que escribiera el prólogo para mi diccionario de refranes, me respondió afirmativamente y añadió: "in for a penny, in for a pound". Venía a decir que, una vez metido en harina, lo mismo daba asumir un compromiso más. En castellano habría podido decir: «preso por mil, preso por mil quinientos». También: «puestos a ello, hagámoslo». El refrán inglés tiene un sentido muy próximo: una vez iniciada una empresa, o aceptado un riesgo, lo razonable es seguir adelante hasta el final. Entre nosotros, la idea aparece asimismo en el viejo dicho «es igual ocho que ochenta», empleado, entre otros, por Quevedo, Gracián y Gabriel y Galán.

Esta cita de John Simpson , de su The Word Detective , que de paso recomiendo a los enamorados de la lengua inglesa, dice: "The British are in general bad at learning foreign languages and the general concept of linguistic diversity, but I agreed with the multilingual objective that EFNIL, and the European Commission promoted: that state educational systems should promote the knowledge of two languages as well as the country's native tongue." Esto demuestra que en todas partes cuecen habas y que bilingües de verdad hay pocos en el mundo. Los gobernantes y políticos tratarán siempre de promover idiomas extranjeros, sin aplicarse el cuento ellos, claro. ¿Tiene esto arreglo?    

  Soy gran admirador del Oxford English Dictionary , la obra lexicográfica cumbre y monumento especial a la lengua inglesa, de la cual ando enamorado desde siempre. Tengo todo tipo de libros sobre el tema y acabo de añadir otro: "The Word Detective, a Memoir" de John Simpson , que fue, hasta 2013, Editor-in-Chief del diccionario y prologuista mío. Le pedí al Dr. Simpson un prólogo para mi Diccionario bilingüe de refranes y me escribió unas cuartillas sobre el tema que son una maravilla.  Recomiendo a todos los fans de la lengua inglesa y del OED que lean este volumen sobre lexicografía, el diccionario de Oxford, y las peripecias del Dr. Simpson como persona y redactor jefe. Lecura fascinante. 

I have come across The Word Detective , Searching for the meaning of it all at the Oxford English Dictionary written by Dr. John Simpson, former (until 2013) Chief Editor of the Dictionary. I recomend this book to all, especially to those who are trying to master the English language and enjoy it. It is indeed a wonderful read, and as the taste is in the pudding, go order it and read it. You will thank me, I know. Dr. John Simpson is an expert on English proverbs and as such, I had the audacity of asking him to prologue one of my bilingual dictionaries of proverbs. And he was kind enough to write a wonderful preface to my book in which he supports my efforts at parallel lexicography , English and Spanish. Parallel lexicography is the poor relative of lexicography. Perhaps this is so because publishers ignore the basics of language and entrust the compilation of bilingual lexicons to people who are half baked intellectually and linguistically.
