SOB AND EUPHEMISMS

Imagen
Humankind is aggressive—physically and verbally—and both forms are dangerous. Verbal aggression in the shape of insults is widespread across languages, and I would venture to suggest that son of a bitch is one of the most widespread of them, at least in the Western world. I stand to be corrected. The expression has generated its euphemisms. In English, we find softened variants such as son of a bee , son of a biscuit , the jocular son of a gun , and the abbreviation SOB . One newspaper writes: “…but he is a damn son of a bee and yet I am very happy he was not killed” (News 24, November 24, 2017, U.S.). The pattern itself— son of a + X , hijo de + X —is strikingly productive. Needless to say, I reject both such verbal aggression and violence in all its forms.

EUFEMISMOS MAL TRADUCIDOS DEL INGLÉS

Imagen

TO CROAK AND TO EXIT

Imagen
Veamos unos en inglés: To bite the dust. Turn up one´s toes. To check out. To cash in one’s checks (chips) To exit. To go feet first. To go west. To kick the bucket. To push up daisies. To go west.

"NUMBER TWO" AND EUPHEMISMS

Imagen
Today I was refreshing my quotes from William Shakespeare, and I came to  “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By Any Other Name would smell as sweet , ” ( Act-II, Scene-II  Romeo and Juliet ) which I find interesting. Allow me:  The act of voiding excrements from the bowel through the anus is called to defecate. The hoi polio says “take a dump or a crapper”, or “go to the can, or to the john.” Enter the euphemism carrying a banner with more “sophisticated” possibilities: “Go to the bathroom,” “go to the toilet” (“How often do you go to the toilet”, the doctor will ask), “a bowel movement,” and “empty your bowels, “do poo” or even “do poops.” “Number two” is also in current use. My point is that “S..T” by any other name will smell as foul. Then, why the euphemism? Words are but sounds, and we react to them according to culture, upbringing, social status, and the like, and language is not to blame.

English euphemisms / Eufemismos ingleses

Imagen

Imagen
Podemos decir: That guy is gay , ese tío es gay.

Of Niggars and Krakas and euphemisms

Imagen
The N word is taboo among polite society, and that is why instead of "nigger" people use the silly euphemism "the N word ." Nigga, nigger, niggar refer to a black person. I suppose this is so because black people react violently when th ey are addressed as "niggar". If they did not react, wh ites would probably s top calling them "nigg ars" and would have to find another word. Blacks call whites "kraka", and whites feel insulted by the term . I sort of like it myself.  Most of my friends are krakas and they are all right, most of them. Words are neither good nor bad, only insofar as we are affected by them, to paraphrase Baruch de Spinoza.  Call me whatever, but treat me as a human being. There's the rub. YOLO is a new acrony m used on the internet, mainly by those who are still wet behind the ears, and it means You Only L ive Once.  It is used to justify whatever one does because, after all, we only live once, so what the he...

Four-letter words - Palabrotas, palabros

Imagen
Shit is a four-letter word. Shit es una palabrota. “In the nation’s capital, snow is rightfully a four-letter word.” FOXNews, Feb., 10, 2010. ·… but I associate the staff at my library with a four-letter word beginning with F.” The Guardian, Feb., 22, 2010. His talk is full of blasphemies and four-letter words , su habla está plagada de blasfemias y palabrotas. Veamos: To shit   no suena tan mal si decimos to defecate. To fornicate no suena tan mal que si decimos to fuck. Turd suena fa...
