Die of, from, for.

Morir: to die, died, dying. To die of old age, to die from tuberculosis. Pero cuando morimos por una causa we die for our freedom, morimos por nuestra libertad.

To pass on, to pass away, to check out son eufemismos muy empleados. A mí me gusta to kick the bucket, estirar la pata.

Importancia de "to be" y "to have"

En mi ESCRIBIR Y COMUNICAR EN INGLÉS (Oberón, Anaya, 2017) digo:

"Los verbos que hay que aprender como si nuestra vida dependiera de ello son to be y to have, porque no sólo son ser y estar, haber y tener, sino que se emplean como auxiliares para ayudar a otros verbos a poder ampliar sus posibilidades."

 No se lo tomen a broma, estos dos verbos son la piedra angular de la gramática inglesa. Macháquenlos y domínenlos, y su inglés será más eficaz y claro.

Fonética inglesa

Para aprender a pronunciar la lengua inglesa y saber distinguir su sonidos, tan distintos del castellano, es indispensable este libro de fonética inglesa:

Palmer's Grammar

Rereading Frank Palmer's Grammar, I was reminded of some phrases he writes in his book:

1. Speech is ephemeral while writing is permanent. You can only hear speech, and cannot touch or visualize it.
2. There are no spaces between words in speech. We separate words in writing butinspeechwecannotdoitandthat'swhypeoplespeakfast. So the task is to separate words when listening. A difficult task in a foreign language.
3. The letters of the alphabet are insufficient to represent the sounds of English. This I explain in my Phonética inglesa para torpes.
4. Grammar is the study of language, not a set of normative rules. If we study grammar we can better understand how a language works.

Negative adverbs and syntax

 

Negative adverbs: never, seldom ever, barely, hardly, rarely, not only, nor, nowhere. Estos adverbios pueden abrir una frase para dar énfasis, y en ese caso se invierte el orden como si fuese pregunta:

I seldom work on Sundays / Seldom do I work on Sundays

She will never do that again / Never will she do that again

You will find this nowhere else / Nowhere else will you find this

I seldom visited her in those days / Seldom did I visit her in those days

We rarely drink after six / Rarely do we drink after six.

He insulted me and also took my car / Not only did he insult me, he also took my car.

 

Ejemplo con nor, tampoco:

But there was no evidence that it set off hormonal changes. Nor did the researchers find evidence of toxicity.

AGED y sus pronunciaciones

No me canso de decir que la pronunciación inglesa es traicionera y no se puede confiar en ella. Por eso escribí Phonética inglesa para torpes (Oberón, Anaya, 2015.)
Jamás pronunciaremos palabras desconocidas sin cerciorarnos antes de cómo se enuncian fonéticamente.

AGE y AGED es un ejemplo más. Veamos:

Ojo con la pronunciación de este verbo to age:

An aged man (eijid), un hombre mayor.

The aged suffer more (eijid), los mayores sufren más.

The dead man was aged 40 years (eijd), el muerto tenía 40 años de edad.

Aged wine (eijd), vino añejo.

She has aged a lot these past years (eijd), ha envejecido mucho estos últimos años.

To be of age, ser mayor de edad. Be careful, I don’t think she is of age.
