REFERENCE LETTER FOR ChatGPT

Imagen
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:   ChatGPT is suave, nice, polite, agreeable, urbane, a flatterer from way back, and very eager to be helpful and useful. However, I cannot recommend ChatGPT because it is untrustworthy, a liar, and an intellectual thief. In its eagerness to be of help, it will make up anything to please the questioner, ready to cheat and fantasize with reality and language. It is a textlifter without scruples, with no qualms about pretending the answers he posits are its own. If you wish to engage its services, be wary of inconsistencies in its work and double-check whatever material it offers. Do not be deceived by this trickster if you decide to hire its services. You have been warned.

AI AND PHRASEOLOGY

Imagen
In my previous post, I dealt with the Spanish idiomatic expression caerse de un guindo , and gave to fall off a turnip truck as its equivalent in English. Today I consulted my AI version and asked it to translate caerse de un guindo into English: "The Spanish phrase "Caerse de un guindo" translates literally as "to fall from a cherry tree." However, it's an idiomatic expression meaning someone is naive, gullible, or unaware of something obvious, as if they had just realized something for the first time. A more natural translation in context might be: "To be clueless." "To be naive." "To have just woken up to reality." "Have you been living under a rock?" As far as bilingual phraseology is concerned, AI is still wet behind the ears. Please, tread carefully when using it. (Have you been living under a rock?)4o

ChatGPT AND ME

" The phrase "ponerse el mundo por montera" is a Spanish idiom that literally translates to "putting the world on like a bullfighter's hat" in English. However, its meaning is more metaphorical and doesn't have a direct equivalent in English." This is what ChatGPT tells me and, do you know what? I don´t give a flying fuck what AI says, yo me pongo el mundo por montera . "Th government doesn´t give a fly fuck about them." (The Guardian, June 23, 2023.) "Yo haré lo que me dé la gana. Me pongo el mundo por montera." (Manuel Martínez Mediero, El niño de Belén , 1991.)
