 Compiling a comprehensive bilingual dictionary is never a simple undertaking, but when the focus is on phraseology, the task becomes particularly demanding. Phraseology includes idioms, collocations, locutions, proverbs, sayings, set phrases, clichés, similes, exclamations, puns, and countless other fixed or semi-fixed expressions that give a language its distinctive character. In many respects, phraseology constitutes what might be called la entraña viva, la esencia comunicadora de una lengua ,   the living core, the communicative essence of a language. Native speakers do not communicate by stringing together isolated dictionary words alone; they rely on habitual combinations, inherited turns of phrase, and culturally shared expressions that carry shades of meaning impossible to capture through literal translation. La política y los políticos tienen gran influencia en el lenguaje, al estar siempre expuestos a los medios de comunicación. A veces sueltan frases sin pensar, que se hacen famosas y en cualquier Diccionario de citas (el mío incluido) hallamos "pensamientos" de toda índole. Quiero recordar el " Pintan bastos " de Manuel Fraga Iribarne , ministro que fue de Información y Turismo, para describir el autoritarismo del gobierno de Franco. Y no olvidemos la pifia de Federico Trillo que cuando creía que el micrófono estaba apagado soltó su famosa " Manda güevos " que fue muy celebrada en su momento. Y la última de hoy, y la mejor, es " tinta de calamar " de Isabel Díaz Ayuso , Presidenta de la Comunidad de Madrid, España, que no encontramos en diccionarios pero sí en bases de datos y en mi Diccionario fraseológico bilingüe. Hay frases que se rescatan del olvido porque un político, de más o menos relevancia, la emplee en público. 

Si fuésemos a un médico a sabiendas que a veces acierta y a veces se equivoca, seríamos unos temerarios. Si entregamos nuestras traducciones a una máquina como ChatGPT a sabiendas que a veces acierta y a veces no, seríamos unos inconscientes. Por ejemplo, ChatGPT me dice que "cada loco con su tema" se dice en inglés "each crazy person with their own theme", que tiene bemoles.  Le pregunto otra vez cómo se dice en castellano la expresión inglesa "have a one-track mind" y me responde, sin inmutarse, que se dice "tener la mente en una sóla dirección." Para ese viaje no necesitamos alforjas. Me recuerda a la famosa traducción "from lost to the river" de "de perdidos al río". ¡Mucho cuidado con ChatGPT , que lo barato es caro!

  Los idiomas son un reflejo y apéndice del cerebro, una herramienta para comunicarse con otros cerebros. Y de ahí que siempre tengamos modos de expresarse iguales o parecidos en diversos idiomas. Los niños, y adultos, emplean varias maneras de seleccionar a uno (de entre varios) en juegos por medio de frases hechas. Un ejemplo en inglés es (la versión que yo sé):  "Eenie, meenie, miney, mo catch a tiger by the toe, if it hollers let it go, eenie, meenie, miney, mo!"  Que en castellano (mi versión) es: "Pito, pito, gorgorito, ¿dónde vas tú tan bonito? A la era verdadera pim, pam, pum... ¡Fuera! Y he rebuscado y encontrado la versión francesa: "Am, stram, gram, Pic et pic et colégram Bour et bour et ratatam, am, stram, gram...Pic! Y seguro que hay muchas versiones en muchos idiomas.

We forget that idioms also have synonyms. A case in point is the English expression "to a T" which can have diverse parallel expressions in Spanish. To a T A derechas, sin faltar una coma, como Dios manda, que ni pintado, salir algo redondo (bordado), en su punto He copied the document to a T - Copió el document sin faltar una coma. Things must be done to a T - Las cosas hay que hacerlas a derechas. I want you to make your bed to a T - Quiero que hagas la cama como Dios manda I delivered the lecture to a T - Di la charla que ni pintada The steak was done to a T - El filete estaba en su punto 

  Llegar (llevar) a buen puerto Come (bring) to fruition Las negociaciones finalmente llegaron a buen puerto The negociations finally came to fruition --“…subrayaron las dificultades que entraña llevar a buen puerto este proyecto.” La Vanguardia, 27/02/1994. The definition I find for " get up (stand) on one´s hind legs " is to become angry and assertive, as in:  “Campbell Coyle stands  up on his hind legs  and explains why it is not an act of rebellion to attempt to get rid of our infirmities by prayer.” Pacific Medical Journal, Vol. 38, 1895. US. || “When John was accused of betraying a family secret he reared  up (on his hind legs ) and denied it fiercely.” George Meyer, The Two-Word Verb , 1975. US.   For " tirar (echar) las patas por alto " we find the definition: "dar rienda suelta al enfado que se siente gritando o en cualquier format violenta." As in: “Y han decidido echar las patas por alto y crear un caos de todos contra todos, para no quedar como los únicos malos de la película.” El Mundo, 15/01/1995. Esp. Both refer to the action of a horse when excited or frightened. Both idioms have developed independently with the same origin and the same meaning.

  En la Biblia, Daniel 5:5-31, una mano misteriosa escribe en la pared y el Rey llama a Daniel para que interprete el escrito: the writing on the wall , el augurio, el aviso, el barrunto que esconde el mensaje. El equivalente castellano de verle las orejas al lobo puede que venga de la historia de un cazador que se jactaba de haber visto al lobo, cuando en realidad sólo le había visto las orejas. Pero esas orejas evidenciaban la presencia del lobo, sin tener que ver más. Si barruntamos un peligro, si interpretamos que algo puede suceder, decimos en inglés we see the writing on the wall y en castellano le vemos las orejas al lobo . “The company was not doing well and Margaret saw the writing on the wall and got a new job in another firm.” “I´ve seen the writing on the wall for some time now and I´m ready.” “Peter could see the writing on the wall for the struggling company.”   “En Estados Unidos ya han visto las orejas al lobo de Putin.” “Espero que Pedro le ...

  A veces los modismos son tan obvios y claros que su significado salta a la vista. Así tenemos add fuel to the fire , cuya definición, mía, es: “to say something to make a situation worse than it is.” Y con echar leña al fuego tenemos tres cuartos de lo mismo: “decir algo que pone las cosas peor de lo que estaban.” “The economic situation is bad and the war has only added fuel to the fire .” O sea, que la guerra ha puesto las cosas peor, al echar leña al fuego de la mala economía. “Aunque en realidad no le interesaba demasiado lo que los vecinos pensaran sobre ella, tampoco era cosa de echar leña al fuego .” (Antonio Álvarez Gil, Naufragios , 2002.) También se oye en España echar gasolina al fuego.

  Irse de la lengua , con la idea de escapársele a uno un secreto, tiene su equivalencia en inglés en to spill the beans , derramar las habichuelas, judías, frijoles, y también en otra, let the cat out of the bag con el mismo significado de revelar secretos. Cuando decimos en inglés que “It was supposed to be a surprise birthday party for Mary, but David spilled the beans and now she knows”, que equivale a decir que el bobo de David se ha ido de la lengua y ahora Mary sabe que le íbamos a hacer una fiesta sorpresa de cumpleaños. Y ya no hay sorpresa. Se conoce que los ingleses eran unos chivatos de marca mayor porque tienen muchas expresiones aparte de spill the beans , como let the cat out of the bag , shoot off one´s mouth , be long-tongued , give the game away , y blow the whistle . Pero nadie es perfecto ( Nobody´s perfect ), como decían en la película Some like it hot ( Con faldas y a lo loco ). El origen de la frase castellana es obvio, pero no así el del modismo in...
