SER and ESTAR are wonderful Spanish verbs with which we can express nuances and subtleties, which prompt us to think how the poor English speakers manage with only the verb to be.
But, as we have studied earlier in another post, the English-speaking peoples are very resourceful and cunny and noticed this problem right away. We all know they have envied Spaniards for centuries and so after much thinking they developed ways to circumvent and bypass the ESTAR and SER problem, so as not to be the less. Let us see:
Spanish:
SOY interesante
ESTOY interesado
English:
I am interesting
I am interested
Spanish:
SOY aburrido
ESTOY aburrido
English:
I am boring
I am bored
Spanish:
ES divertido
ESTÁ divertido
English:
He is amusing
He is amused
Spanish:
ES sorprendente
ESTÁ sorprendido
It is shocking
He is shocked
and more with exciting, embarrassing, frightening, confusing, depressing, terrifying and horrifying. (N.B. This short article has been written in a spirit of fun and joyful glibness and flippancy. My partiality to English breakfast is well known.)
