THE HEART

The heart is the seat of love, feelings, emotions... and Shakespeare tells us (Hamlet, 3.2) "In my heart´s core, ay in my heart of heart" meaning "in the innermost recesses of one´s being." In my heart of hearts I know you love me" I would say to a damsel. "En lo más profundo de mi corazón" I would exclaim in Spanish, as if the heart had any depth. But those are the workings of the language. "In my heart of hearts" goes the English expression and "en lo más profundo de mi corazón" replies the Spanish version, as well as "en el fondo." (The above "ay" could mean "always" or "aye", yes.)
