SPELLING VARIANTS ENGLISH AND SPANISH

 

There are Spanish words that have two possible spellings (homographs), and often one is more common than another. This is not a question of regions or countries, but personal idiosyncrasies only. For example: 

Arpa may be spelt harpa

Alacena may be spelt alhacena

Armonía may be spelt harmonía

Sabiondo may be spelt sabihondo

Yerba may be spelt hierba

English also has this feature, as in gray/grey; likeable/likable; omelet/omelette; T-shirt/tee shirt; offense/offence; theatre/ theater; donut/doughnut, and many more. However, we must bear in mind that there are variations between American English spelling and British English spelling. Normally, your spellchecker will advise you depending on which variation you have opted for. Whatever you choose, you must be consistent: do not spell honor in one page, and honour in another.
