La familia Wallace (padre, madre, y dos hijos) va a venir a tomar el té esta tarde, y lo anunciamos así en ingles: "The Wallaces are coming for tea this evening." Si también invitamos a los Smith, diremos: "The Smiths are also coming." By Wallaces we are implying all the members of the family, nd that´s why we use the plural.
In Spanish the surname is used in the singular: "Los Pérez vienen a merendar", meaning that the Pérez family is coming. By "los Pérez" we imply "todos los Pérez" o "la familia Pérez." No plural is needed, even though the article (los) is in the plural.
