PER Se prefiere /a/ en vez de /per/, pero se ha afincado esta última palabra mucho en el habla coloquial y a los puristas les repatea su uso y dicen que se debe emplear sólo en cuestiones técnicas como: twenty miles per hour, fifty dollars per day. Podemos decir perfectamente twenty miles an hour, fifty dollars a day. En frases como percent, per anum, per capita es la única alternativa, por lo del origen latino. En vez de as usual veremos mucho per usual: The team, per usual, was its own worst enemy.

GAIN To gain, ganar, alcanzar, adquirir, aumentar. To gain weight, aumentar de peso. I am gaining wait, estoy aumentando de peso. To gain advantage, llevar, ganar ventaja. If we do it this way we will gain advantage over them, si lo hacemos así les ganaremos ventaja. To gain time, ganar tiempo. Do not stop, we must gain time, no pares, tenemos que ganar tiempo. What have you gained by doing that?, ¿qué has ganado por hacer eso? I gained their respect, gané su respeto. She gained a good reputation, alcanzó una buena reputación. Como nombres gain es aumento beneficio: net gain, beneficio neto. Ganar tiene muchos significados y muchas traducciones al inglés.

To come, venir. To go, ir. Pero su uso no es parecido. Veamos: Si estamos con alguien le diremos: I will go to London. I am going to London. Si telefoneamos a una persona que está en Londres y nosotros en Barcelona, por ejemplo, diremos: I will come to London. I am coming to London. Y si estamos en el cuarto de estar y nos llaman desde la cocina, gritaremos en inglés: I am coming. O simplemente Coming! Todo esto es así porque en lengua inglesa pensamos en la persona que nos escucha. Para la persona en la cocina que nos llama “venimos”, y por eso le decimos I am coming. En castellanos tomamos nuestro pundo de vista, somos los que vamos, y cuando nos llaman desde la cocina decimos ¡Voy!
