English names to Spanish geography

Imagen

Happy Birthday To You

Imagen
Y nos gusta oír eso de Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Laura, Happy Birthday to you! All birthdays are true accomplishments: against tribulations, illness, the ups and downs in the road of life...

La entonación inglesa

Imagen

The definition drill for Language Learning.

Imagen
Speaking is the capacity to express ideas, concepts,  in a clear and direct way. The goal of studying languages is to acquire the facility to express what we have in our minds. The definition dril l gives student the oportunity of expressing an idea in the target language. If the idea or concept is well expressed, the listener can understand what the speaker is trying to say. In the definition drill , a student is given a set of words. She chooses one without saying which it is and then proceeds to define it. At first simple nouns will do: Chair Carpet Hat Bank increasing the difficulty to Skin Throat Idea and then going on to verbs like To come To sign To sleep To kill Using the definition drill , students have to become wordsmiths, lexicographers, trying to define a term using simple and few words. No examples are accepted in definitions. Try this definition drill with your more advanced students. I employ it often with satisfactory results. Give them a ti...

"Reply back" / "get ahold" / "alright" and Sofrito

Imagen
Language , and the way we speak it, pronounce it and write it, is the way we interact with the world and the way we give information about our character, background, education and lifestyle. So we should be careful. Yesterday someone e-mailed me saying "I replied back." Reply means "to make answer in words or writing." "Back" with "reply" is a needless word. The same as "fall down," "listen up," or "return back." Take note. A few months ago I wrote a short article where I used the expression "get hold of" which was "corrected" by my editor to "get a hold of." As I am tired of discussing language issues, I said nothing. But yesterday I thought of this when I ordered from Amazon the novel Sofrito , by Phillippe Diederich which has been highly recomended. I am eager to read it. The information given is: "In this entertaining debut novel, Frank Delgado tries to save his failing re...

The 5 skills in Language Learning

Imagen
It is not a mistake. The four skills are now the five skills . Speaking , listening , reading and writing are nothing without the most important skill of all: pronunciation , or phonetics , or phonology ..., call it what you wish, the sounds of the language . From square one, from lesson one in our language studies we must insist on pronouncing well. We must demand phonetic correction from our teacher all the time. English has a large variety of sounds that present a challenge for foreigners, especially Spanish-speaking ones. Comparing sounds in two languages, comparing words, we will detect the difference. A /d/ in English has a sound that a Spanish /d/ will never have. Compare did with dedo . (Or majestad , parado , dad , lad ) No wonder people do not understand us. No wonder we do not understand people. Insist on a thorough grounding in sound repetition.

Dictionaries and Language Learning

Imagen
How lucky we are with the technology we have at our command which provides learning tools our grandparents, and even parents, never dreamt of. Dictionaries are probably the most important tools in language learning . Dictionaries provide easy-to-understand definitions, examples of usage, points of grammar and even pronunciation. You can hear a word as it is pronounced, as many times as you want or need. And the best is that now, thanks to technology you can carry dictionaries on your cell phones. You can download dictionary applications and get information anytime, anywhere. It is like carrying a teacher in your cell phone. I urge you to download at least one bilingual dictionary and two monolingual dictionaries.  Consult them because they are the source of interesting information of all kinds. I actually force my students to download dictionaries , and ask them to check words instead of giving them the answer. Do not take my word for it, download a monolingual diction...
