  Ocurrir, suceder, soler, atañer, acontecer, empedernir son verbos defectivos que, claro, tienen defectos. Soler , se emplea en presente, suelo dormir mucho los domingos , y en pasado, solía bailar más que ahora , pero no decimos he solido , ni soleré. Cuidado con hacer violencia a estos verbos corrigiendo sus supuestos “defectos”. Acaecer, incumbir, abolir, concernir, son verbos defectivos también.

  El empleo desaforado de la preposición de delante de que cuando no es necesaria: Me ha dicho de que no le interesa , debe ser me ha dicho que no le interesa. Me alegro de que hayas llegado bien , debe ser me alegro que hayas llegado bien. No creo de que llueva , es no creo que llueva . Debe emplearse de cuando el verbo domina esta preposición: informar de , avisar de, dudar de, cuidar de, preocuparse de y no con otros verbos que no la rigen: le informamos de que no abriremos mañana , dudo de que diga la verdad. Una regla útil es: si la pregunta lleva de , se emplea. Por ejemplo: ¿De qué se preocupa? Se preocupa de que llueva. ¿De qué duda? Duda de la opinión del jefe. Pero: ¿En qué piensa? Piensa en la economía. ¿De qué tiembla? Tiembla de frío. No se debe decir: Temo de que no venga. Pienso de que no lo comprará. (Aplíquese aquí la prueba de la pregunta.) No escriba: te digo de que vamos a tener mal tiempo, sino te digo que vamos a tener mal tiempo. No escriba: Creo ...

  La lexicografía comparada, paralela, castellano-inglesa, no ha prestado suficiente atención a los modismos, a pesar de que todos los diccionarios bilingües, en mayor o menor grado, los incluyen, a regañadientes. No suelen dar ejemplos de uso y las traducciones son enigmáticas y alejadas de la realidad idiomática. Parece como si simplemente quisieran salir del paso, terminar la obra pronto, sin rigor alguno. Y si la lexicografía es el arte de las definiciones exactas, la lexicografía bilingüe es el arte de las equivalencias exactas.

  Mr. Sánchez Castejón is, by a fluke, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain and certainly not my cup of tea. As I do not wade in the mud of politics, I will not mention his policies and how he steers the kingdom's rudder. He appears in the news often -self-satisfied and with grinning features- and recently he went to Davos. Spanish TV showed him speaking English... and my hair stood on end as I listened with bated breath. He is a worse polyglot than Rafael Nadal , which is saying a lot, I dare say! Of course, his followers are probably in awe at their president´s language skills, but I am chagrined deeply. Not that other European politicians fare any better, of course, and I can imagine all of them, gathered, captained by Sánchez, happily destroying the English language, its grammar, phonetics, and phraseology in a prepoterous language approprietion. So, you want to learn Spanish? Excellent idea. It will expand your intellectual horizon and keep your mind on its toes for years to come. But you may have a question: Of all the varieties of Spanish in the world, which one should you learn? Peninsular Spanish? Mexican Spanish? Puerto Rican Spanish? And more. And within them, there are many dialects and variants... A dilemma, indeed. I would advise you to learn "educated Spanish" which is the one that sheds local and dialectal types and is easily understood because it is spoken slowly and emphasizes the sounds of the language, even with different rhythms. Shy away from jargon, and helter-skelter pronunciations. Be precise and slow, and savor the sounds of the language, and how each sound connects with another to form the musicality of Spanish. And congratulations on choosing Spanish, a language spoken and written by over 500 million people.  

  What if I told you that many teachers of Spanish confuse the - se of verbs like aburrirse , lavarse , peinarse , casarse , arrepentirse , simply because they end in - se and use the pronouns me , te , see , nos , os ,  se, explaining that they are all reflexive verbs, thus creating confusion among learner?  REFLEXIVE VERBS : The verb's action goes back to the doer, using the reflexive pronouns me , te , se , nos , os , se : Lavo el coche , but me lavo : I wash myself. Peinarse , lavarse , cortarse , are  such verbs.  PRONOMINAL VERBS : Use the personal pronouns me , te , se , nos , os , se , in their conjugation: arrepentirse , casarse , quejarse , jactarse , but the action does not boomerang back to the doer. Me caso el mes que viene , I will get married next month. Pronominal means they use pronouns. Casar means to match, casarse means to get married. Despedir , to fire, despedirse , say goodbye. Acostar , put to bed, acostarse , go to bed.

  Los idiomas son un reflejo y apéndice del cerebro, una herramienta para comunicarse con otros cerebros. Y de ahí que siempre tengamos modos de expresarse iguales o parecidos en diversos idiomas. Los niños, y adultos, emplean varias maneras de seleccionar a uno (de entre varios) en juegos por medio de frases hechas. Un ejemplo en inglés es (la versión que yo sé):  "Eenie, meenie, miney, mo catch a tiger by the toe, if it hollers let it go, eenie, meenie, miney, mo!"  Que en castellano (mi versión) es: "Pito, pito, gorgorito, ¿dónde vas tú tan bonito? A la era verdadera pim, pam, pum... ¡Fuera! Y he rebuscado y encontrado la versión francesa: "Am, stram, gram, Pic et pic et colégram Bour et bour et ratatam, am, stram, gram...Pic! Y seguro que hay muchas versiones en muchos idiomas. 

  Reincido en este tema porque parece que no me he explicado bien. ¿Cuál es el mejor inglés? ¿El norteamericano, o el irlandés o el neozelandés? Saquen papel y lapicero y apunten: El mejor inglés es el que se entiende a la primera . Algo falla cuando hay que decir please, repeat , o what ? o come again ? Más simple, imposible. Apliquémonos el cuento cuando hablemos inglés (y ya de paso, cuando hablemos castellano.)

En ocasiones, las pequeñas frases demuestran nuestros conocimientos de un idioma, al brindar, por ejemplo. Para María Moliner, brindar expresa un deseo cualquiera o el deseo por la felicidad o la salud de alguien al mismo tiempo que se levanta en alto la copa o vaso de que se va a beber... Para el Diccionario Random House, to toast is   a salutation or a few words of congratulation, good wishes, appreciation, remembrance, etc., uttered immediately before drinking to a person, event, etc. A tu salud  se dice en castellano. El inglés tiene varias variantes, algunas jocosas y extrañas, pero correctas: To your health. Here´s to your health. Here´s mud in your eye. Here´s looking at you. (Esta última la emplea Bogart en la película Casablanca , en la escena final, que yo traduciría por va por ti. )

Los idiomas, como las aguas, van por sus cauces naturales y según su propio devenir, y van cambiando según sus propias leyes y reglas naturales, sin violencias externas, ajenas a su esencia natural. Esto lo traigo a colación por los que se empeñan últimamente en forzar la voz pasiva e introducirla en el castellano innecesariamente. "He sido despedido de la empresa" por "me han despedido de la empresa", "la novela ha sido escrita por el célebre poeta mexicano" en vez de "el célebre poeta mexicano ha escrito la novela." Ya sé que tratar de pedir que nos ajustemos a la esencia del castellano hoy es como pedir cotufas en el golfo, pero me aventuro  a hacerlo para que no se diga. Una cosa es importar léxico inglés y otra introducir a hurtadillas modos gramaticales innecesarios en castellano. La voz pasiva, como su nombre indica, es pasiva.   When we hear folks talk about "los Reyes" in Spain, we know they are referring to the Magi, the Three Kings, the Three Wise Men, who come from the East bearing presents, and gifts, on the night of the 6th of January. "Los Reyes Magos" bring presents to the good and chunks of coal to the bad and naughty. We will hear: "¿qué te han traído los Reyes?" and children will recite "un tren, una muñeca, un balón, un teléfono inteligente..." Los Reyes Magos, are part of the cultural and linguistic lore of Spain... draped in the garb of "giving", and signaling the end of the Pascua de Navidad. 

  Some people mistakenly write "baited breath" for "bated breath": "We watched with bated breath as the runners approached the finish line." That is, with breath drawn in or held because of anticipation or suspense. Of course, and per usual, bilingual people have an advantage because they can fall back on the Spanish "estar en ascuas, con el corazón en un puño, conteniendo el aliento", for example. Add this idiom to your list, and use it.   

  A while ago I took a weird, online vocabulary test and the result was that my vocabulary in English was about 22,000 words. I wish I had such a large vocabulary! I guess that, at most, I own around eight thousand English words. This debate about the number of words speakers have has been going on for a while and despite technological advances, we are still in the dark. My (un)educated guess is that most native speakers handle a handful of terms and phrases and repeat them over and over. The problem is not with their vocabulary but their ideas, conceits, and thoughts which, always being the same, drape them in the same words. They have little new to say and need not new terminology. If you wish to expand your vocabulary you will have to read and check all the words you ignore or you are not sure of.   

  Phraseology, I hold, is the epitome of the full development of language. Language unleashed flows into phraseology. It deals with feelings, mindsets, and imagination. To go straight, to go taking the shortest route becomes as the crow flies .  The next town is thirty miles from here, as the crow flies . It is not true that the crow flies in a straight line, but it matters not because language, phraseology, does not have to be scientific or logical. Bear this in mind. 

Myths pass on from generation to generation, unquestioned and unexamined. One such is that Spanish is pronounced as it is written, or, if you will, it is written as it is pronounced, which leads the unaware student to believe that learning Spanish is a cinch. For example, the fricative /d/ is so very fricative that it often is inaudible, and disappears in practice. A good example, among many others, is the words that end in -tad or -dad: Libertad is pronounced and heard as  libertá . Lealtad is pronounced and heard as  lealtá . Dignidad is pronounced and heard as  dignidá . Actualidad is pronounced and heard as  actualidá . Estabilidad is pronounced and heard as  estabilidá .  Variedad is pronounced and heard as variedá .
