My humble suggestion to US speakers of Spanish to keep their Spanish up to scratch is to READ. I have expressed several times that we learn a language by speaking it and we reinforce it by reading. But we must read actively. We must look up (and learn) new words and expressions. Unfortunately, speaking with the family will not increase your language scope.
