I know the meaning of cantar las cuarenta a alguien, or leerle la cartilla a alguien, and other similar expressions in Spanish. Today I learnt a new one: Cantarle la tabla a alguien. I had not met this idiom before today, and I hasten to share it with you:

someone off, give a good talking to, give someone a piece of one’s mind, read
the riot act, give someone the whatnot, tar and feather someone

le ha cantado la tabla a David por llegar tarde The
teacher told David off for being late
